The Chamber met with Minister Scott Kent and his officials on Sept. 16, 2016 to get an update on resource development in the Watson Lake area. Besides the several welcome ongoing mining developments lately, which have helped business and job activities, discussions lead to the role of Forestry here. Two interesting and promising areas are the government’s interest in biomass heat for Johnson Elementary School. A RFQ (Request For Qualifications) is soon to be posted. The other is the Minister’s stated desire, under consultation with the Kaska people, to try to develop a Forestry Plan for Watson Lake by the Spring of 2017. The subsequent business and jobs associated with this would be a big boost for all the people of Watson Lake.
